India consumes over 120 million milk pouches every day, yet most households remain unaware that these pouches can be recycled. As a result, soft plastics frequently end up in landfills, waterways, drains, or are openly burned, contributing to pollution, microplastic contamination, and environmental degradation. An often-overlooked aspect of this issue is the small triangular plastic snips cut from milk pouches before use. These lightweight pieces frequently enter drains and water bodies, posing a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems.

How we responded.
Collection & Segregation
Mobilizing local communities to source-segregate and clean household post-consumer milk pouches.
Processing & Upcycling
Aggregating and channeling cleaned LDPE waste to authorized recyclers for processing into durable plastic pellets.
Community Impact
Creating secondary products and raising environmental awareness across Kolkata neighborhoods.
Why This Works
The project succeeds because it makes environmental action simple, accessible, and easy to replicate. Rather than asking people to make drastic lifestyle changes, it encourages a small, everyday habit that can collectively create meaningful impact. We didn't ask for a revolution. We asked for less than 10% extra effort. And that has been enough to begin changing the city, one milk bag at a time.
What it added up to.
- 700+ milk pouches collected and diverted from landfills
- 30+ households and small businesses actively participating
- 100+ citizens sensitized to plastic recycling
- Established a replicable community-led recycling model
- Prevented soft plastics from entering local drains and waste streams
